ABOUT US

SMECAO Fund stands for Same Mwanga Environmental Conservation Advisory Organization, it is a Non Governmental Organization (NGO) formerly operating as a project under the umbrella of Evangelical Lutheran Church Tanzania (ELCT) Pare Diocese from 1994 when it was founded till November 1999 when it was official registered as an NGO with registration number 1846. Since 1999  under Trustee Incorporation Ordinance, SMECAO operates in Same and Mwanga Districts, Kilimanjaro Region and is governed by the Board of Directors. 

 

The organisation was pioneered and created by the late Mr Simion Mmakasa and the late Rev. Herbert Miraro as response towards increased environmental conservation  degradation in the two districts during early 1990's.

Intended at advocating for sustainable environmental conservation and education to raise awareness on continued desertification of the Same and Mwanga districts.

 

In 2010 the organisation went through major changes in term of project implementation. Administration as its current intervention is on livelihood projects which fundamentally targets towards improving livelihood capacities of low income rural households to withstand socio economic and climate change stress.

 

At the highest level of administration SMECAO has a Board of Trustees with eight members who oversee the management of implemented projects.

OUR MISSION

Improve techniques related to environment, health and gender system for sustainable development through implementation of related activities which consequently improve living standards of rural households.
